The 774.7 class diesel locomotive, which is designed for heavy shunting and track service on 1,435 mm gauge track, is the product of a comprehensive upgrade of the original T 669.0 type ČKD locomotive (now the 770 class). The locomotive’s low-hood design was achieved using a modular construction kit and by applying a fundamental diesel locomotive upgrade concept.
The tests on the 774.701-7 were arranged and conducted by the Railway Research Institute (VUZ) at its Velim Test Centre. The tests with the load set were mostly performed on the Centre’s Small Test Circuit and the tests on the standalone locomotive on its Long Test Circuit. The aim of the tests was to measure the traction properties of the vehicle, the properties of its electrodynamic and pneumatic brake and the hygiene parameters in the driver’s cab (noise, vibration, toxicity, dust level). The traction tests also included temperature-rise tests on selected electric rotating machines and tests of the heating parameters of the engine’s cooling system and various other components. A set made up of a dynamometer car and three Czech Railways 743 class locomotives, which have a powerful electrodynamic brake in the low-speed band (these locomotives were built for the Tanvald-Kořenov mountain line), was used for the temperature-rise and traction tests. During the traction tests, the 774.7 reached a maximum starting tractive effort of 415 kN (!). The tests on the 774.7 locomotive were performed within the requested deadline and scope. The results not only met but exceeded expectations.
