Vehicle description:
The six-axle 770.5 NK diesel locomotive (locomotive no. 770.501-5 – 770 class, type IDs: ČME-3, T 669.0, DES 3100, LDE 1500), with its 990 kW ČKD K6S 310 DR diesel engine, DC transmission and maximum permitted speed of 90 km/h, was the product of an upgrade. The key feature of this upgrade is the installation of a “new” turret cab, which significantly improves driver visibility. During the upgrade the mounting of the underframe on the bogies was also changed (rubber-metal suspension was installed) and an electrodynamic brake fitted.
This partial upgrade of the 770 class locomotive, which significantly enhances operational safety, will allow us to implement a second modernization phase, the outcome of which could be the installation of a new diesel engine (e.g. a Caterpillar 3512 B DI-TA) and the simultaneous lowering of the remainder of the front hood. This repowering is expected to involve, for instance, changing the DC transmission to AC/DC, upgrading the auxiliary drives and installing a new economical compressor. Another realistic option that may be considered is a modification of the gauge. Any further changes would together constitute a “comprehensive upgrade” and would essentially produce a new locomotive with a high “value-in-use”. The locomotive is designed for heavy track and shunting service on national and regional railways and on sidings of 1,435 mm gauge (up to 1,520 mm after modification) in the options defined in the loading diagram.
