The 724.7 locomotive was the product of a comprehensive upgrade of the original 740 class and is designed for medium-heavy shunting and track service, primarily in industry. It is a cab-behind-engine locomotive with a single turret cab near the rear end of the unit with AC/DC power transmission and an EDB. The following parts from the original locomotive have been retained: the bogie assembly, underframe, main air reservoirs and fuel tank. The cab and hoods, including internal fittings, have been entirely reworked.
A new 627 kW Caterpillar 3412 E DI-TA engine, flange-coupled to a Siemens Drásov 1FC2-454 traction alternator, has been flush-mounted in the underframe, allowing the hood to be lowered and a superb-visibility turret cab (with large windows and forward-sloping windshield) to be installed.
The motor generator contains a Caterpillar cooling block with a fan driven by V-belts from the free end of the motor. At the forward end of the front hood there is a pneumatic block containing most of the locomotive’s pneumatic equipment, including a screw compressor (724.701) or rotary vane compressor (742.702). The short rear section contains the switchboard and the EDB resistor. The 724.7 locomotive is fitted with a 1,020 kW inclination/gradient and stopping EDB and an electronically controlled automatic and direct-acting pneumatic brake. The DAKO air brake is dual system. The locomotive is operated using an NES electronic digital control system.
