Vehicle description:
In 1997, two 710 class locomotives were upgraded to the 711.7 class at ČMKS-JLS. Both these reconstructions were carried out using documentation supplied by Patent. The locomotives broadly corresponded to the 711.0 units, although a 328 kW Caterpillar 3406 DI-TA engine was used and the locomotives were named the 711.7 class, with inventory numbers 701 and 702. Locomotive 711.701 is fitted with a radio remote control unit and coupling gear. A third 710 class locomotive has now been upgraded to the 711.7 class (inv. no. 703) using ČMKS’s own design documentation.

A new turret cab and hoods have been built on the original bogie assembly. The underframe is fitted with 60 mm thick buffer beams and spacious platforms with flights of steps leading up to the catwalk. Locomotive 711.703 is a cab-behind-engine locomotive with a new-design turret cab (taken from the 724.7 class locomotive) with diagonal driver’s posts and forward-sloping front windshields. This cab is UIC 651 and TNŽ 28 5201 compliant. The front hood covers an engine compartment with a diesel unit, cooling unit and auxiliary drives. A pneumatic braking block, switchboard, EDB block and traction motor are located in the rear hood.

The LOCAT 3406/351 drive unit consists of a 328 kW Caterpillar 3406 DI-TA diesel engine and a flange-connected Siemens Drásov 1FC2 351-4 traction alternator, which powers a TE 005 traction motor via a rectifier. A new mechanical downward gearbox is driven from the traction motor via a cardan shaft.

The other parts of the drive (cardan shafts and axle gearboxes) are based on the original vehicle design. The engine water is cooled by an original Caterpillar radiator mounted at the forward end of the front hood.

The 3DSK100 compressor is driven by V-belts. The air brake equipment block, switchboard + rectifier, and electrodynamic brake (EDB) resistor are located in the rear hood. The pneumatic brake is a DAKO-GP system with a BSE brake valve and electronic controllers for the automatic and direct-acting brake. The EDB (350 kW) has an inclination/gradient mode. Locomotive 711.703 is also fitted with a radio remote control unit.

Electric power transmission is AC/DC. Via a traction rectifier the traction alternator powers a traction motor working with full or weakened series excitation. A regulator controls the current, voltage and output limitation of the traction generator characteristics, depending on the diesel engine’s actual speed and the specified relative traction.

The prototype 711.703 was unveiled at an international engineering fair in Brno in 1998. It was completed in 1999 and lent to the town of Mokrá (August 1999) and later to Germany for trial operation. After completion of type tests and an assessment of the trial operation phase, the locomotive was sold to the end customer. Locomotive 711.703 represents the basic design for upgrading 710 class locomotives to 711.7 class locomotives.
