Vehicle description:
Despite their age, the 703.7 class locomotives are generally in very good condition, and thanks to the good properties of their hydraulic power transmission and well-preserved bogie assembly and ČKD-SRM gearbox many of them are still in service. Owing to restricted visibility, especially when shunting (due to a narrow cab), and the poor technical condition of the original hooding, the cab and hoods have been extensively upgraded since 1996. The following parts from the original locomotive have been used: the complete bogie assembly (underframe with mechanical brake part, axles, propeller shafts, axle gearboxes and hydraulic traction gearbox) and compressor.
The new end cab is constructed across the full standard track gauge. This, combined with large windows, gives the driver a much improved working environment. The cab has a double (“tropical”) roof, one control desk, and front entry from a rear platform. The locomotive is fitted with electronic controllers for the automatic and direct-acting brake. The upgraded units have been equipped with a new six-cylinder liquid-cooled Caterpillar CAT 3306 DI-T engine and the locomotives have been marked with a new inventory number starting with 701.
